So after climbing down my stairs and searching in the old and quite dusty vhs cupboard i finally found it, a nearly ten year old video copy of Pocahontas.
I ran excitedly to the television and inserted the video. I watched in sheer happiness as i watched pocahontas sing about the colours of the wind. So content that no matter what is happening in the world this movie would make me forget all that as it was a happy movie and even better a happy ending.
Oh boy was i wrong, The prince charming of this story is Captain John Smith and he gets shot and is sent home to England, Pocahontas does not go with him. The lovers are not able to be together.
So what message is Disney sending? The point to Disney is the good girl gets the good guy and they live happily ever after.
A native Indian Princess falls in love with a White man who at first she couldn't understand, They overcame the race issue and the pressure to be with their own kind and then what? It was nice to meet you see ya later. One of my favourite Disney films was destroyed by this an hour long roamnce and adventure that captured your heart as they say and then shot away by Pocahontas watching as the love of her life sailed away.
Is that a good message for Disney to be sending? The late great Walt Disney would be shocked! Of corse i can't complain to much cause afterwards i watched Cinderella and The Little Meramid. So not all was lost.
